I think the European Union is a good thing. It has promoted peace and prosperity for our continent for half a century. However it does have an intensely bureaucratic regulatory side however which can work against both prosperity and liberty. A good example is the insane set of regulations being currently proposed for ornamental plants.
You can read about it in the Telegraph here:
More information here from Plant Heritage, and a useful list of UK MEPs to write to. And more here from Plant Heritage, with MEP contacts for other countries.
It is very important that all of us who are EU citizens to act on this. And soon. There is only a week left for submissions.
Also angry, because of taxes increase in France... What ca we do do except go and shout in the streets whih is the case here...
ReplyDeleteIs there a petition anywhere. This proposal is ridiculous and unworkable.
ReplyDeleteThere is a petition at 38 degrees. Spread the word!
ReplyDeleteCould you give us a link to the petition? I've not be able to find it on the 38 degrees site. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIn France, we already have a very great problem, which is called "catalogue officiel des semences", it has been created during the 2nd world war (what a strange thing to bother about in the middle of an "end of the world" situation .....)and says which seeds are allowed for selling. The certification is very expensive, and therefore cannot be asked for by little firms (see Kokopelli problems for more informations). More than that, we , gardeners, are not supposed to give our seeds privately obtained to other gardeners !
ReplyDeleteof course, only multi-national firms can achieve the certification, and this will lead to a very poor diversity in the future ! already, it explains why one cannot have a large choice of cultivars , especially for vegetables, and more than that, all local varieties (although lot of small nurseries and associations try to go on growing them) will soon or late die ....
Europe is led by lobbying, which can be ggod or not, depending on the purpose .... I am ready to sign a petition, one more, but I must say that I do not feel anyone hear me .....
As you say, Noel, it is great to have an European Union to make sure there will be no war anymore between European nations as it happened twice in the last century. But the EU develops more and more into a dangerous system that exploits its people, its nations, its businesses, ... It behaves more and more like a monster only thinking about nurturing itself and securing its own existance while exploiting hard working people with neverending new laws and restrictions, which costs the citizens of Europe loads of money.
